We Can Do | 7/26/2005, back
The philosophy behind the program is that every child should have the opportunity to learn. Because children learn during playing and exploring, limited participation can mean limited learning. This program is designed for each childs maximum participation in the learning process. When a childs physical abilities are affected by illness or injury, that child may have difficulty participating in school. Assistive technology and environmental adaptations used during early childhood development can have a life-long impact on that childs abilities. The program will provide an opportunity for children to use technology and adaptations in a natural, child-centered environment as that child develops his system of communication, his mobility, his expectations, and his sense of self. WEE CAN DO! is for young children who are demonstrating a desire to interact with other children and explore their environments. Two groups of three to four kids meet twice a week with a speech therapist, occupational therapist, and physical therapist. The goal of the program is to provide an opportunity for children to acquire skills that will lead to successful integration into a typical preschool or early learning center. Our team will partner with the A.C. Lewis YMCA preschool to provide an environment that will allow a transition from the highly specialized setting into a more typical, natural child environment. If you are interested in finding out more about WEE CAN DO!, please call McMains Childrens Developmental Center to speak with Elissa McKenzie.
